“AAN DE AMSTEL”
Inspiration for this artwork came from the rich chestnut browns of the leather tote made by Debra Ann.
Reflected also in so many of the 16th century buildings, lining the canals in Amsterdam, along with the reds, greens, blues, greys etc. These historical and architectural beauties seem to come alive especially in spring and fall. The trees along the canals lend their own element to a timeless ever-changing picturesque canvas. The Amstel River is indeed a ”living thing” conveying a quiet peace in the midst of a very bustling city.
Living in the heart of Amsterdam for ten months in 1990, I would take canal boat rides just on a whim, taking in the magic of a tiny city with a big heart – total inspiration for any self-taught artist.
About the Artist
Claire enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age in Guyana. Moving to Canada in 1974, with new challenges and distractions, art took a back seat. Photography and travelling became new passions.
In January 1990, she relocated to the Netherlands. Surrounded by museums in Amsterdam awakened her childhood passion again. She felt very privileged to study watercolour, acrylic, oil, pastel, portrait and sumi-e with inspiring, nurturing teachers over a period of 8 years.
Returning to Canada in 2007, she is rediscovering her love for painting and experimenting in digital artwork. She is convinced there is a little bit of “the artist” in everyone.
